150cc Scooters & Mopeds
150cc mopeds are by the most common size of these vehicles. They are all 4-stroke and some are liquid cooled, which helps them run faster. You can expect a 150cc moped to run about 55mph with no problem, so if this is the type of driving you plan to do, then this might be the right vehicle for you. If you plan to go on the highway, a 250cc scooter would be more suitable for you.
150cc mopeds can typically handle about 350 pounds of weight, which can include a second passenger. Remember though, that the more weight you add, the less acceleration you will get. As with all mopeds, the great thing about 150cc scooters is that the gas mileage is excellent. You will usually get about 75mpg from them, which is more than almost all cars on the market, including hybrid models.
This is probably the most common size of scooter, because it is affordable, yet provides enough power to ride on normal roads. 150cc scooters can typically accelerate to speeds of 50 to 60 miles per hour and can safely travel both on city streets and some highways. So, if you want a gas scooter with more oomph and size than 50cc mopeds, look into this class of scooters.
Scooters have various engines. I will particularly tackle about gas engines. Cubic centimeters or “cc” is used to measure the size of a gas engine. It basically depicts the air volume and cylinder bore’s intake of the fuel mixture. The most prevalent type of scooter is the 50cc engine. This is in fact well below 50cc. In most cases, 50cc scooters are actually 49.1 or 49.9. This type of scooter is preferred by many because it’s the smallest size available that you can drive in most places without a license. The next available size is the 150cc. This is more powerful and can be driven on the freeway. The different sized scooters also have their own benefits and downsides. Normally, those with smaller engines are more affordable but also runs slower.
Difference between Two Stroke and Four Stroke engine
Many manufacturers used to produce gas motor scooters with two stroke engines. However, they found out that it wasn’t very friendly to the environment. Two stroke engines tend to generate more pollutants. They are also less competent. They are not long-lasting and maintenance is required more often making owners shell out more money. Some of the engine parts deteriorate easily because it lacks a keen lubrication system. That’s why in 2004, manufacturers finally made the big switch. Currently, new scooters are furnished with four stroke engines. They are now more reliable and easier to maintain. Two stroke engines may be completely faced out in just a few years time.
With four stroke engines, changing the oil is much easier. It can be done in no more than 20 minutes. Unlike with the two-stroke engine whose oil changing takes about almost an hour to complete. During cold weather, four stroke engines’ carburetor jets will not have a varnish type film over it. Clogging of the oil won’t be possible so you can still use it for a ride even on a cold day.
Four stroke engines are indeed more recommended than the two stroke engines. Think about the scooter’s performance and longevity before deciding to purchase one.
