1950s Scooters

Even before 1950 there were as over 100,000 scooters on the road in Italy alone. It The Vespa gas scooter was a huge hit at the 1950 Motorcycle Show and from that point, scooter production began to boom all over the globe. Between 1950 and 1958 Vespa sold over 125,000 scooters in the United Kingdom.

At this time, gas was scarce, and the high gas mileage of the scooter helped it grow in popularity. By the mid 1950s, France alone was selling 1 million units per year.

Especially with older scooters like this, you want to be as safe as possible. In bad weather, take extra precaution. Furthermore, since these older models tend to be smaller, you are not as likely to be seen by other drivers, and in heavy traffic. Be absolutely sure to wear a helmet with a face shield (or buy goggles), knee pads, and elbow pads. Try to avoid heavy traffic when possible and try not to ride at night. The lights on these scooters from the 50s are very small and weak. Try to upgrade the headlight and taillight if possible, and be absolutely sure to add side reflectors. Finally, try to avoid gravel or rough roads, and take a motorcycle/safety class if you can. Good luck and have fun!
