Piaggio is the original maker of Vespas. Piaggio was in fact originally manufactured fighter planes for the Italian Military. After the war ended, the owner, Enrico Piaggio, chose to convert the company into a motorcycle business. The original founder was Enricos father, Rinaldo. It is rumored that Piaggio was inspired for the Vespa design from the United States Cushman scooter, which was brought to Italy during World War II by the US Military. The actual designer of the Vespa was Corradino DAscanio.
If you are one of those people who don’t know much about scooters, buying one can become a perplexing process. There is a wide array of models and types from different manufacturers you can choose from. I had the same problem when I decided to purchase one for me. It was a difficult time because I had no idea on what kind of scooter to buy. I tried doing some research and did a little browsing online. I was disappointed to find out that there are only a few number of reviews on scooters available. I couldn’t find the right information I was looking for and their prices differ so much. Plus, nearly all scooters look the same.
I wanted an updated 150cc scooter that could be driven on the interstate. My requirements were good gas mileage, comfort and reliability. Since then, I’ve learned a lot of things about scooters. I’m writing this article to help you in your search for that perfect 50cc to 250cc scooter.
Owning a scooter has many benefits. Here are some of them:
- * They are very user friendly. Anyone can easily drive a scooter around. They are comparable to motorcycles, only much lighter. Their engine is situated just above the rear axle, close to the rear wheel.
- * The rider can comfortably place his feet directly on the step-through frame.
- * They are very affordable. You can buy a used motor scooter for less than a thousand bucks and a new one for around $1,500. The price depends on the brand and the size of the engine.
- * Their gas mileage is truly remarkable. This is their biggest selling point. While an average car consumes a gallon of fuel for every 20-30 miles and a hybrid can go for 40 miles, scooters reign in mileage because they can go for 60 -120 mpg. That’s why more people choose scooters over any other vehicle.
- * They are legal and can go anywhere around streets. It can also be driven on highways as long as its engine is 125cc and up. You can start strolling around as soon once you’ve acquired your motor scooter license and insurance.
