Looking into buying a moped?
Dear Acmetack, most likely, I will either buy a used Honda or Yamaha scooter. Can you tell me what to watch out for, like how to spot any defects? I am looking for a very small scooter suitable for driving in the suburbs or small city. I want one that goes 60 miles per gallon. I don’t want one with pedals.
Try not to buy the first bike you see. Take your time and you will get a bike that will last you a long time. Always test drive it and go over the paperwork to make sure it has been regularly maintained. Check for damage and scratches. Ask how many owners it has had. Rev the engine and listen to how it sounds. If you don’t know what to listen for, bring a friend who does. Check the wheel and tires for wear and tear. Ideally, the service and maintenance have been performed by an authorized dealer with factory parts. Study the bike many times over before making a decision. Don’t impulse buy!
