Dear Acmetack, most likely, I will either buy a used Honda or Yamaha scooter. Can you tell me what to watch out for, like how to spot any defects? I am looking for a very small scooter suitable for driving in the suburbs or small city. I want one that goes 60 miles per gallon. I don’t want one with pedals.

Try not to buy the first bike you see. Take your time and you will get a bike that will last you a long time. Always test drive it and go over the paperwork to make sure it has been regularly maintained. Check for damage and scratches. Ask how many owners it has had. Rev the engine and listen to how it sounds. If you don’t know what to listen for, bring a friend who does. Check the wheel and tires for wear and tear. Ideally, the service and maintenance have been performed by an authorized dealer with factory parts. Study the bike many times over before making a decision. Don’t impulse buy!

Dear Acmetack, what kind of oil should I use in my 125cc scooter? Would 20W-50 work?
Lots of bikes use 20W 50. Very few use 10W 30. 20W-50 would be best in warmer weather and 10W40 would be best in cold weather.

I want to get a moped or scooter that is 50cc, something like a YAMAHA, Honda, or Aprilia. I want to pay for it myself. I have been saving for quite awhile and will be spending most of my money on this. I think I deserve it. How can I convince my parents to let me buy this?

Tell them the benefits, such as the good gas mileage. If they drive you around a lot right now, calculate how much they would save in gas if you drove yourself. They find reviews and tell them that the top speed is only 40mph. Lastly, tell them that you will take a Safety Class before you start looking for mopeds for sale. Finally, try to show them some safety brochures.

Dear Acmetack, are mopeds and scooters ladylike?
Scooters like Vespas are usually considered gender neutral. I have both female and male friends that ride Scooters. They are a great alternative to traditional motorcycles. They are not necessarily ladylike nor manly. They just help you get from point A to point B.

Dear Acmetack, I have a 49cc scooter that goes up to 40 miles per hour, but I want it to go faster. What can I do to soup up my moped?

To boost the power of your moped, you can add a sports exhaust to get the speed up to about 50 miles per hour. If your scooter has a Centrifugal clutch, you can also remove the restrictors of the Variator. In addition, there is a washer/cone in the exhaust which restricts the exhaust gas flow from the engine. If you replace this with an aftermarket model, you should see some additional performance. Lastly, this is getting pretty advanced, but you can change out the barrel head and piston for a bigger capacity one.

You can also check the air filter and see if you can replace it with one that would give you better air flow. Good luck!
