In recent years, especially in light of the recent surge in gas prices, many urban commuters have purchased used Vespas. These scooters come in particularly handy when parking is rare in large urban areas. Used Vespas are also getting more and more popular due to their low running costs.
In light of increasing US sales at Vespa dealers, Vespa developed the GT, which offers a 200cc, four stroke, engine. Piaggio recently released their largest Vespa scooter model to Vespa dealers, the 250cc engined GTS250.
Why are Vespa Scooters so Popular?
It was during 1940s that the Vespa scooters were first manufactured in Italy. It was intended to be an alternative to motorbikes. Its brilliant creators made sure that the engine and oily parts are safely hidden inside the rear engine casing. This prevents the rider from getting oil stains on his clothes. Vespa exudes a certain appeal and sophistication that makes them so popular with the high profile people. It embodies the debonair and competent Italian.
Italians strolling around their Vespa scooters with matching Rayban Wayfarers were common sights that were always given second glances. Coolness was written all over them. Just as expected, Hollywood took notice and started to follow the trend. And before you even know it, Vespa scooters started to appear on the silver screen. Vespa became an overnight sensation when featured in the movies such as American Grafitti, The Conversation, Quadrophenia, An American in Paris and La Dolce Vita to name a few. Vespa’s popularity sky rocketed when photos and videos of celebrities using them came out.
Sarah Jessica Parker, Robert De Niro, Steven Spielberg, Henry Fonda, Anthony Quinn, Stella McCartney, Jay Kay (Jamiroquai), Gwyneth Paltrow are just some of the celebrities seen cruising around with a Vespa. And then there was Mickey Rourke who got arrested for DUI while on his Vespa.
Vespa scooters are garnering more patrons not only because of their stylishly sleek look but also for being friendly to the environment. And because of the worldwide economic crisis, Vespa scooters can save you lots of money on gas. So if you’re thinking about helping out the environment, think of Vespa. You’ll not only have a cool ride, you’ll get to be a planet saver too.
As with many types of vehicles, moped enthusiasts have formed a number of organizations devoted to collecting, repairing, and all things moped-related.
The Moped Army is a moped gang with many local branches across the United States. Different branches put together rallies around the country each year
The Moped Riders Association is a global organization that provides moped riders the opportunity to share information and organize riding events.
The National Autocycle and Cyclemotor Club (NACC) caters for different types of mopeds in the UK and are affiliated with the Vintage Motorcycle Club (VMCC).
Other local organizations also exist, such as the Royal Canadian Moped Posse from Toronto, the Rocket Ship Tomos from Japan, and The Variators, which were formerly a branch of the Moped Army, from Ottawa.
"Forever Vespa" is a film that was produced to only be shown in festivals. It runs for 54 minutes and takes a look at the life of Vespa from its birth to the present day. The filmmaker put together lots of old footage from the Piaggio group, as well as many interviews of Vespa enthusiasts. The movie is narrated and is accompanied with firsthand testimonials from those who were there when Vespa first launched.
